Beyond Grid Constraints: Accelerating Renewable Integration
The energy transition, driven by the rapid integration of renewable energy sources and the electrification of demand, is placing unprecedented pressure on power distribution grids. In Europe, as highlighted by the IEA, renewables already account for approximately 50% of electricity generation, significantly increasing the operational and planning complexity of distribution networks.
At the same time, distribution grids are becoming the true backbone of the energy transition. By 2030, more than 70% of new solar capacity is expected to be connected at the distribution level. However, grid infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with this growth. A recent AFRY report indicates that, across several European countries, more than €100 billion worth of renewable energy projects are currently stalled in distribution grid connection queues, while hundreds of gigawatts of capacity remain awaiting connection due to existing grid constraints.
These trends highlight a fundamental challenge for Distribution System Operators (DSOs): ensuring adequate grid capacity, maintaining system resilience and reliability, and avoiding congestion, while managing a growing number of connection requests and distributed energy resources (DERs).
Advanced software solutions support grid planners in addressing these challenges by accelerating infrastructure planning and decision-making processes, enabling more efficient CAPEX allocation and faster processing of grid connection requests.
Through real-world use cases developed in collaboration with Distribution System Operators, these solutions provide a data-driven view of the grid, helping to:
- identify where and when to invest in infrastructure;
- optimize the utilization of existing assets;
- reduce connection request backlogs and processing times.
